This page is just a quick note, really–a cautionary note.
TANSTAAFL! ’There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch’ (with a nod to Robert Heinlein)
There will always be a need to upgrade and ‘the house always wins when you’re in Vegas’.
Consider this one item: When you get website making software for your computer and get a hosting account, who owns your account? Nobody but you, because you own the system and can host it anywhere.
When you use a proprietary system, who owns your account? The system owner, because you can’t use what you build anywhere else.
If you are building a hobby site or you can’t afford $3 a month-ish, then you need to use a free system – and that’s what they’re for.
But if you want your site to grow long term and make money, or represent your business, you may want to approach any proprietary system with caution. They can be a way to get stuck if you hit a snag, so you need to be fairly sure you will like them for a long time to come.
Other than that, look over the free systems at ‘the top of the heap’ and try ‘em out!
You may note that we made ‘test installations’ at all of the reviewed sites, and they were all good. You lose nothing to try them!
